'THE LEGENDARY SOUL MAN' SAM MOORE W/ VANCE GILBERT (PERFORMING "THEY KILLED A KING", A TRIBUTE TO MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME AT CITY WINERY) - 4/1

01/04/2014 | CITYWINERY.COM

On April 4, 2014, the unfortunate anniversary of the loss by assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, a song Sam recorded recently in Memphis, “They Killed A King” is being released to honor Dr. King’s memory and remind us all of his message. During the time of Dr. King, Sam and duo mate Dave often traveled the south as the opening act for Martin at rallies and speeches so participating in this project, besides the obvious link to his fame sprouting in Memphis where Dr. King was lost to us all, has an extra note of importance to Sam.

Sam will perform "They Killed a King" for the first time in front of a live audience on 4/1 at City Winery.

For years Sam Moore was best known for lending his unmistakable lead vocals to the historic soul duo Sam & Dave that hailed from Miami, Florida but found their fame tied to the Memphis based Stax Records. The rapid fire call and response  fashioned by Sam from his gospel roots became the trademark style of the duo and can be heard in the vocals of hits including “Hold On I’m Comin’”, “I Thank You”, “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby” and of course the song legends are made of “Soul Man”.

Though he has tremendous love and respect for the music he created as “the voice” of the duo, Sam, who has been referred to as “the greatest living soul voice and my mentor” by Bruce Springsteen, has maintained his appeal and stardom as a solo artist and continues to score critical acclaim for his recorded works and live performances around the world. He’s also appeared in several movies including “Blues Brothers 2000” and the documentary “Only The Strong Survive”.

Sam, a multi-gold and platinum award selling recording artist is a multiple Grammy Award nominee; a Grammy winner; NARAS Song Hall of Fame Awardee; Florida Chapter NARAS Hero’s Awardee; AFTRA AMEE Awardee; CMA 2 time nominee; MOBO Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  He and former partner Dave were the inspiration for The Blues Brothers.

Veteran singer Sam Moore of the soul duo Sam & Dave is releasing a song in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. to coincide with the anniversary of the civil rights leader's death.

Known as the "Legendary Soul Man," Moore teamed with producer Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell and studio musicians to record "They Killed a King" in Memphis in January.

The song is being released April 4, the 46th anniversary of King's assassination. King was shot while standing on the balcony of the old Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

Moore and his Sam & Dave singing partner, the late Dave Prater Jr., recorded several soul and R&B hits such as "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'" at Stax Records.

Moore knew King and performed at many of his speeches.
